Shiatsu is a traditional hands-on Japanese healing therapy. It can help in a wide range of conditions from specific injuries to more general symptoms of poor health. Shiatsu is a deeply relaxing experience and regular Shiatsu sessions help to prevent the build up of stress in our daily lives.
The philosophy behind Shiatsu is the vital energy (Ki) that flows throughout our body within a series of channels called meridians. When Ki stops flowing freely this then produces a symptom. To help move the Ki again and depending on your constitution and general energy levels, techniques will be applied to help improve your energy flow, like gentle holding, pressing with palms, thumbs, fingers, elbows, knees and feet onto the meridian. Sometimes more dynamic rotations and stretches are appropriate too. As the quality of Ki changes, the symptoms associated with a lack of flow will gradually improve too.
Shiatsu is a therapy that works on the individual as a complete being, not just the physical body but also on the emotional and/or mental level too. During the first session your current state of health, the symptoms you are experiencing and a detailed case history will be taken so that we can develop the complete picture of your health according to the principles of Oriental medicine.
Sessions take place on a padded mat at floor level and the client stays fully clothed. It’s best to wear comfortable clothing.
